Background
The Slate Canyon Youth Center is a minimum and medium-security state facility established in 1995 and managed by the Division of Juvenile Justice Services for the State of Utah. This facility is a juvenile detention center for males only and has 3 different levels of juvenile offenders. The level one juveniles are separated from the level 2 and 3 juveniles, however, the level 2 and 3 juveniles are mixed. This facility is a no-contact visitation facility, meaning juvenile offenders and family members can only communicate through video chat for 30 minute periods.

The Challenge
Consistent damage to lighting fixtures within the detention center cells along with potential ligature issues led the Slate Canyon facility to seek a better lighting solution. The Youth Center’s Assistant Facilities Manager, states, “I’ve managed 30 facilities throughout my career and seen a lot of damage to light fixtures. The Solution
By replacing the current competitive fixture with Shat-RShield’s Ironclad® VR Pro™ Correctional Cell Fixture, the ceiling footprint has been reduced dramatically, the uplighting is improved and the lighting within the cell has a noticeable difference even from a closed cell door (see below). The safety features provided by the VR Pro™ including the flush mounted outer ring and tight bolt pattern offer safety, security and a ligature-resistant design.
This is an excellent light fixture and I’m impressed with the amount of light that it puts out as well as the safety features it provides. On a scale of one to ten this fixture is definitely a 10.
